Bark Chippings

Bark chippings, sourced from the outer layers of trees, are a versatile addition to gardens and landscapes. When used as mulch, they offer numerous benefits. A layer of bark chippings suppresses weed growth by blocking sunlight, reducing the need for manual weeding. They also help retain soil moisture, decreasing the frequency of watering. Additionally, bark chippings regulate soil temperature, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter, which benefits plant roots. Aesthetically, they enhance the visual appeal of garden beds and pathways, providing a natural and polished look.

To apply bark chippings effectively, spread a layer approximately 5 to 7.5 centimetres deep over the desired area. Ensure the mulch doesn’t touch the base of plants or tree trunks to prevent moisture-related diseases. Over time, bark chippings decompose, enriching the soil with organic matter. To maintain their effectiveness, replenish the mulch layer every one to three years, depending on decomposition rates and garden conditions.

Incorporating bark chippings into your garden not only elevates its appearance but also fosters a healthier environment for plants to thrive. Their natural composition and practical benefits make them a valuable resource for gardeners seeking both form and function in their landscaping efforts.
